Perimenopause: Symptoms and What Actually Helps

Updated September 5, 2026 · 8 min read

Perimenopause is the transition phase before menopause — often starting in the 40s — when hormones fluctuate, periods become irregular, and symptoms like weight gain, poor sleep, mood changes and hot flashes appear. What helps most: protect your muscle with strength training, move without impact, prioritize sleep, and eat enough protein. It's the ideal time to build these habits.

Perimenopause is often misunderstood: you're not the same as before, but you're not fully in menopause either. The good news — it's the best window to take action.

What perimenopause is

It's the transition toward menopause, which can last several years (often from the mid-40s). Estrogen fluctuates before it declines, which is why symptoms can appear while your periods haven't stopped.

Common symptoms

Why act now

The habits you build in perimenopause largely shape the years that follow. This is when you can limit muscle and bone loss, steady your weight, and protect your sleep — before the hormonal drop settles in.

What actually helps

  1. Strength training 2 to 3 times a week — protects muscle and bone.
  2. Low-impact movement — walking and cardio for heart, weight and mood.
  3. Sleep — a consistent evening routine.
  4. Food — enough protein, fewer fast carbs.
Very heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after a long gap should be checked by a doctor. For bothersome symptoms, a clinician can discuss options with you. This is general information.
