Knee Pain Exercises: What Helps, What to Skip

Updated September 5, 2026 · 6 min read

For knee pain, the most effective exercises strengthen the surrounding muscles and restore gentle mobility without loading the joint: straight-leg raises, glute bridges, hamstring curls, and gentle range-of-motion work. Movement usually helps knee pain more than rest — but avoid deep bends, impact, and anything that sharpens the pain, and see a doctor for red-flag symptoms.

Most everyday knee pain improves with the right movement, not with rest. The key is choosing moves that strengthen and mobilize without pounding the joint.

What to skip while it hurts

Avoid running, jumping, deep squats and lunges, and fast stairs while the knee is painful. Choose cycling, water exercise or the elliptical for cardio instead.

When to see a doctor

Seek care if the knee is significantly swollen, hot or red, gives way or locks, can't bear weight, or the pain follows an injury or won't improve. This article is general information, not a diagnosis.
