Gentle Exercises for Seniors: Where to Start (Safely)

Updated September 5, 2026 · 6 min read

Gentle exercises build strength, mobility and balance without strain or impact — ideal if you're just starting, recovering, or managing joint pain. The safest place to begin is with seated and supported-standing moves: marching, sit-to-stands, calf raises and gentle rotations. Start with 10 minutes most days and progress slowly.

"Gentle" doesn't mean pointless — it means smart. Starting gently is exactly how you build back strength and confidence without a setback.

Why start gently

Beginning gently lets stiff joints and out-of-practice muscles adapt without soreness or injury — which is what keeps you going. It's the foundation everything else is built on.

A gentle 10-minute routine

Do a few seated and a few standing moves, 8 to 10 reps each, most days of the week. Add a rep or a round each week as it gets easier. Little and often wins.

Keep support within reach, move slowly, and never push into sharp pain. Check with your doctor before starting if you have a health condition.
